メールマガジンではジャムを取り上げました。

単に「ジャム」というと、パンに塗るものを思い浮かべる方もいれば、音楽でいう「ジャム・セッション」をイメージする方もいるかと思います。

そして、それ以外にもこんなジャムがあります。

なにやら動くのが難しい状態。

なんで難しいのかというと、人やら車がたくさんいるから。

COBUILD ではこんな風に出ています。

If vehicles jam a road, there are so many of them that they cannot move.

If a lot of people jam a place, or jam into a place, they are pressed tightly together so that they can hardly move.

こちらも同様ですね。

まぁ traffic jam なんていう言葉をご存知ならすぐおわかりでしょう。

これは、渋滞とか「押し合いへし合い」している状態ですね。

ん〜。

機械はうまく動かないわ、ストレートに「困難な状況」といわれてしまうわ、ラジオや電気信号は邪魔されるわ、いずれもあまりいい状態ではないようです。

ちょっと調べてみたら jam というのは「ぐちゃぐちゃ噛む」という意味の cham という言葉が語源のようです。

そう思ってみてみると、jam ってこうなんかごちゃごちゃした感じがしますよね。

パンに塗る「ジャム」も、フルーツを煮詰めて煮詰めて作るわけですから。
