私自身は暑いのが苦手なのですが、やはり夏といえば祭り。

なぜかわかりませんが、やはりウキウキしてきてしまいますよね。

最近では、浅草あたりでサンバカーニバル！！なんていって大騒ぎしていますが、個人的には今ひとつあの楽しさがわからなかったりします。

が、それはともかく、メールマガジンではその「カーニバル」を英英辞典で見てみました。

もう一度英文を見ておくと・・・

a public event at which people play music, wear special clothes, and dance in the streets

一方、フェスティバルっていうとどんな感じでしょう。

[festival]
an occasion when there are performances of many films, plays, pieces of music etc, usually happening in the same place every year

A festival is an organized series of events such as musical concerts or drama productions.
(COBUILD)

これを読むと、なんとなく「催し物」というイメージが強くなるかもしれませんね。

個人的には、多くの人が集まってくるのは共通として、特別なイベントがフェスティバル。

そこに「騒ぐ」ような要素が入ってくると「カーニバル」という感じがします。

「カーニバル」には少し宗教的な要素も入っているような気もします。
